Apple Cinnamon Roll Cups

  • Author: Bianca

Ingredients

Scale

Here’s what you’ll need to create these delightful Apple Cinnamon Roll Cups:

  • 1 can (12.4 oz) refrigerated cinnamon rolls with icing: The convenient base for our cups, providing that classic swirl and sweetness. (Most cans contain 8 rolls).
  • 1 medium apple (such as Honeycrisp, Gala, or Fuji): Peeled, cored, and finely diced (about 1 cup). Choose a crisp, sweet apple that holds its shape well when baked.
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter: For sautéing the apples, adding richness.
  • 1 tablespoon light brown sugar, packed: To sweeten the apple filling and create a light caramelization.
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon: The quintessential warm spice that pairs perfectly with apples.
  • 1/8 teaspoon ground nutmeg (optional): Adds a subtle warmth and depth to the apple filling.
  • Pinch of salt: Balances the sweetness of the filling.
  • 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour (optional, for thickening): Helps to thicken the apple juices if your apples are particularly juicy.

Instructions

Follow these simple steps to bake your Apple Cinnamon Roll Cups to perfection:

  1. Preheat & Prepare: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Generously grease a standard 12-cup muffin tin with butter or non-stick cooking spray. If your cinnamon roll can has 8 rolls, you’ll use 8 cups of the muffin tin.
  2. Prepare the Cinnamon Rolls: Open the can of cinnamon rolls and separate them. Set the included icing aside for later. Take each cinnamon roll and gently unroll it slightly, then press it flat into a disc about 3-4 inches in diameter. Carefully press each flattened roll into a cup of the prepared muffin tin, pressing the dough up the sides to form a cup shape.
  3. Sauté the Apples: In a small saucepan or skillet, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the diced apples, brown sugar, ground cinnamon, nutmeg (if using), and salt. Cook, stirring occasionally, for 5-7 minutes, or until the apples are slightly softened but still hold their shape. If the mixture seems very liquidy, stir in the optional tablespoon of flour and cook for another minute until slightly thickened. Remove from heat.
  4. Fill the Cups: Spoon the warm apple mixture evenly into each cinnamon roll cup in the muffin tin.
  5. Bake: Place the muffin tin in the preheated oven and bake for 12-18 minutes, or until the cinnamon roll dough is golden brown and cooked through, and the apple filling is bubbly.
  6. Cool Slightly: Remove the muffin tin from the oven and let the apple cinnamon roll cups cool in the tin for 5-10 minutes. This helps them set and makes them easier to remove.
  7. Frost: Carefully remove the cups from the muffin tin (a thin knife or offset spatula run around the edges can help). While they are still warm, drizzle or spread the reserved cinnamon roll icing over the tops.
  8. Serve: Serve warm and enjoy the deliciousness!
