Ingredients
Scale
Here’s what you’ll need to create these delightful caramelized banana slices:
- 2 large, ripe (but still firm) bananas: Ripe bananas offer the best natural sweetness and flavor. Avoid overly mushy ones, as they might fall apart, but a few brown spots are perfect.
- 2 tablespoons unsalted butter: This provides richness and helps with the caramelization process, giving a beautiful golden color and flavor. You can use salted butter if that’s what you have, just be mindful if you add any extra salt later.
- 2 tablespoons granulated sugar (or brown sugar): Granulated sugar creates a classic caramel. Brown sugar will add a deeper, molasses-like flavor. You can adjust the amount based on the ripeness of your bananas and your sweetness preference.
- Optional: A pinch of cinnamon or nutmeg: These warm spices complement the bananas beautifully, adding an extra layer of aromatic delight.
- Optional: A tiny splash of vanilla extract: Added at the very end, this enhances the overall sweetness and aroma.
- Optional: A tiny pinch of salt: If using unsalted butter, a very small pinch of salt can actually enhance the sweetness and balance the flavors.
Instructions
Follow these simple steps to achieve perfectly caramelized banana slices every time:
- Prepare the Bananas: Peel the bananas and slice them into ½-inch thick rounds. Slicing them too thin can make them mushy and difficult to flip, while too thick might not cook through as evenly.
- Melt the Butter: Place a non-stick skillet or a well-seasoned cast-iron pan over medium heat. Add the butter and allow it to melt completely, swirling the pan to coat the bottom. Wait until the butter is foamy but not browning.
- Add Sugar (and optional spices): Once the butter is melted and foamy, sprinkle the sugar evenly over the melted butter in the pan. If you’re using cinnamon or nutmeg, add it now along with the sugar. Stir gently for about 30 seconds to a minute until the sugar starts to dissolve and mix with the butter, forming a syrupy base.
- Arrange Banana Slices: Carefully arrange the banana slices in a single layer in the pan. Try not to overcrowd the pan; cook in batches if necessary. This ensures each slice gets good contact with the heat and caramelizes properly.
- Cook the First Side: Let the banana slices cook undisturbed for 2-3 minutes on the first side. You’re looking for them to develop a beautiful golden-brown crust. You’ll see the edges start to caramelize and the sugar mixture bubble. Resist the urge to move them around too much initially.
- Flip and Cook the Second Side: Using a thin spatula or tongs, gently flip each banana slice. Be careful as they will be soft. Cook for another 1-2 minutes on the other side, until it’s also golden brown and the sauce has thickened into a lovely caramel consistency.
- Add Optional Vanilla: If using vanilla extract, remove the pan from the heat and stir in the vanilla extract. The residual heat will be enough to incorporate its flavor.
- Serve Immediately: Carefully transfer the caramelized banana slices and any remaining caramel sauce from the pan to a plate or directly onto whatever you’re serving them with. They are best enjoyed warm.
